Timeline of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the Stimulus Bill)

Since the House version of the bill and the Senate version of the bill are different, the law has not yet been passed by Congress. The two chambers will send their bill to a conference committee, where they will hammer out their differences and produce one final bill for the President to sign.

We will have to wait for the Conference Report to know exactly what will be included or excluded from the 2009 Stimulus Bill with regards to COBRA.

Here’s the timeline we’ve heard the President discuss:

  • 2/10/2009: Senate Passes its version of the bill
  • 2/13/2009: House and Senate vote on combined Conference Bill
  • 2/16/2009: President Obama signs the bill into law on President’s Day

Update 02-11-2009: Reports are coming in that the conference committee between the House and Senate have reached a deal. “The differences between the House and Senate versions, we’ve resolved,” Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader, said in a Capitol news conference.

Update 02-13-2009: The House passed the stimulus bill with a vote of 246-183. It will now be voted on by the Senate (likely today).
